Summer is finally here, and with that comes long days in the park, surfing on the beach and all manner of fun in the sun! However, it’s also a key time for taking care of your skin, body and mind.

We all know about the importance of high-quality SPF – especially if (like me) you’ve been blessed/cursed with pale skin. While I’m pretty religious when it comes to applying my SPF 50 at this time of year, the soaring temperatures can leave my skin feeling dehydrated, clogged up and tired. Sometimes, I just need to take time out from the great weather and show my skin I care.

All that brings me to this face mask I tried last weekend. Using a couple of ingredients lying around my fridge, I managed to create my very own natural face mask with avocado and sweet almond oil. With just five ingredients and ready in less than 2 minutes, even a novice chef like me can manage!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp of ripe avocado
  • 1 tsp of crème fraiche
  • 1 tsp of liquid honey
  • 1 tsp of Oleum Vera Organic Sweet Almond Oil
  • A few drops of lemon juice

Method:

First, take 1 tbs of avocado and place it in a reusable container with a lid.

First, add the avocado

Then, add a teaspoon of Oleum Vera's Sweet Almond Oil.

Then, add a tsp of Oleum Vera's Sweet Almond Oil

Pour in the crème fraîche and the honey.

Once the honey and crème fraiche are mixed in, squeeze in some fresh lemon juice.

Once all the ingredients are in, mash the mixture together with a fork. This should only take a few minutes, but you can use a food processor if you prefer.

First, patch test a sample of your mask on your arm, to ensure you aren’t allergic to any ingredients. If your skin doesn’t react badly, spread the mask over a clean face and leave it on for 20 minutes.

When you are finished with your mask, gently remove it using a lukewarm face cloth.

Use your face mask within 48 hours.

So, why does it work? Here’s the ingredient breakdown:

Ingredient Breakdown

Sweet almond oil makes your skin glow, and penetrates deeply into the skin to draw out impurities. Considering this can even be used on the youngest skin, even my sensitive face didn’t react.

Avocado is ideal for moisturizing dry skin when used in natural skin care. This ingredient is also one of the richest sources of vitamin C, E and pro-vitamin A that you can find.

Crème fraiche, like all fermented dairy products, contains lactic acid, which acts as a natural exfoliator and boosts collagen production.

Honey is one of my favourite oatmeal toppings, but it’s naturally antibacterial and helps to rid your skin of infections. It is also anti-inflammatory and full of antioxidants, making it perfect for both acne-prone and aging skin. Meanwhile, lemon juice can help fight acne and extend the shelf life of DIY products containing avocado.

The Verdict: I’ll be honest – I was skeptical about how beneficial avocado would be as a moisturizer. Wow, was I wrong! It was easy to make and easy to apply – unlike a lot of thicker, greasier masks I’ve tried in my time. This little concoction left my skin refreshed, rehydrated and silky smooth.

It also helps that this face mask smells good enough to eat, without sending my sensitive skin into meltdown. I’ve had an avocado obsession for quite some time now, and it’s not going away anytime soon. So, I’m pretty happy this guacamole staple can also feel great on my skin! This recipe has also made me more curious about the benefits of sweet almond oil and honey, which I hope to explore very, very soon!

Tips: Make sure to patch test ANY skin care product you make before applying to the face. Always use summer face masks in conjunction with high-quality sun protection.
